Company Description

We are proudly representing our public sector client based in Darlington for their search for an Legal Clerk. They now have an immediate requirement to recruit for a temporary assignment to start as soon as possible till May 2020. This is a part time position working 18.5 hours a week.

Job Specification

The Role

  • To assist the work of the Legal Teams by providing legal and administrative support to members of the teams
  • To provide and undertake various tasks when legal clerks in the other Legal Teams are absent or unavailable
  • Ensure the seamless delivery of legal and administrative support to Legal Services
  • To undertake legal work appropriate to the grading of the post including drafting documents and letters, issuing proceedings, attending meetings, hearings (including courts and tribunals)
  • To comply with Health and Safety policies, organisations statements and procedures, report and incidents/accidents/hazard and take pro-active approach to health and safety matters in order to protect both yourself and others
  • Liaising with client departments, issuing proceedings, maintaining databases of casework underway, time recording legal work undertaken to cases, working out recharges to clients, billing external clients, arranging for disbursements to be paid
  • Dealing with pre hearing/trial work such as, responding to correspondence, arranging for the service of papers, identifying witness availability, assisting in the preparation of witness statements, creating, updating and the preparation of hearing bundles
  • To attend meetings with both internal and external clients
  • Attendance at hearings/court/tribunals to sit behind counsel or to deal with non-contested hearings
  • Renewal of Interim Care Orders
  • Debt recovery, including car parking
  • Right to buy conveyancing
  • Responsibility for the storage and retrieval of deeds, contract, agreements and associated files
  • Arranging for the signing and sealing of contracts and deeds
  • Arranging the advertising of notices and orders
  • Acting as point of contact for insurance claims arising from the work of the corporate services department
  • Opening and closing files and general file maintenance
  • Administrative support functions

The Person

  • 2 years administrative or legal office experience
  • Experience of effective file management
  • Knowledge of legal processes, courts and tribunals
  • Experience of working in a legal office
  • Experience of working in local government
  • Basic understanding of local government
  • Ability to organising and prioritise own work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to maintain accurate record
  • Able to deal confidently with witnesses, client departments, solicitors and barristers
