Company Description

We are proudly representing our public sector client based in Darlington for their search for a Marketing Officer. They now have an immediate requirement to recruit for a temporary assignment to start as soon as possible until April 2020.

Job Specification

The Role

  • To implement a comprehensive marketing and communications plan, aligned to the corporate Communications Strategy, to ensure that the company’s key messages reach their target audience.
  • To evaluate and report on the effectiveness of the marketing plan.
  • To initiate, deliver and monitor integrated marketing communications campaigns and activities to enhance our client’s reputation among key target groups.
  • To support the Communications Team in maintaining the corporate social media channels and contributing to production of One Darlington magazine.
  • To be an initial point of contact for public enquiries received via social media, responding and forwarding as appropriate.
  • To provide marketing, social media and public relations support and advice to service departments, members and senior colleagues.
  • To anticipate sensitive or potentially damaging issues and manage their communication through a variety of media.
  • To undertake audits and surveys to assess the effectiveness of marketing and communications techniques.
  • To develop and oversee the production of multimedia products to support corporate communications.
  • To absorb complex information on a range of subjects and convert into plain English documents suitable for a variety of audiences.

  • To support and where appropriate lead on one or more corporate campaigns. You will liaise with relevant Senior Managers to develop an understanding of the campaign area and develop appropriate media to deliver the campaign messages.
  • Develop your marketing skills and share learning with other members of the communications team.
  • To support and where appropriate provide leadership with the governance, development, and maintenance of the website.
  • To work closely with colleagues to ensure compliance with corporate information and data governance policies, guidelines, standards and legal requirements at all times including Data Protection, Freedom of Information and records management policies
  • Ensure that you work in line with all the policies and procedures and ensure that you are aware of your obligations under these.
  • Behave according to the Employees’ Code of Conduct and ensure that you are aware of your obligations and responsibilities re: conflicts of interest, gifts, hospitality and other matters covered by the Code.
  • To comply with health and safety policies, organizational statements and procedures, report any incidents / accidents/ hazards and take a pro-active approach to health and safety matters in order to protect yourself and others.
  • Any other duties of a similar nature related to this post that may be required from time-to-time.
  • Written or artistic work that could give the impression that they are advocating support for a political party.

The Person

  • 5 GCSE passes (A to C grade pre-2017 or level 9-4 post-2017).
  • A’ levels, HNC or Degree in communications related subjects.
  • Approximately three years’ experience in marketing and/or communications.
  • Experience of designing, planning and delivering marketing campaigns.
  • Experience of dealing confidently and effectively with media inquiries
  • Knowledge and understanding of the challenges facing local authorities.
  • Experience of interpreting legislation, policy or procedures to give recommendations and advice.
  • Experience of interpreting complex information and converting it into a format so that it can be understood by a variety of audiences.
  • Experience of undertaking project work
  • Effective research skills.               
  • Knowledge of e communications, design, print and photography.
  • Previous experience of working with Public Sector communications and/or marketing.
  • Relevant experience in public relations, journalism or marketing.
  • Experience of line managing colleagues
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing to a wide range of audiences (including ability to deliver effective presentations).
  • Proven ability to deal effectively with Client Departments, outside organisations and customers.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own work with minimum supervision
  • Proven ability to work both individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to determine priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to give advice and guidance, including demonstrating duties, instructing and checking the work of others.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems.
  • Ability to produce original and creative ideas.
  • Effective research and analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Outlook and e-mail.
